Let’s just face the facts here. Quarantine is terrible in nearly every way. For a quarantined college student such as myself, finding a way to stay motivated has been my biggest challenge thus far. With a comfy bed and Netflix, it’s so easy to have the day fly by without getting anything done. The first few weeks after moving to remote learning were especially hard, mostly because I felt like I was on vacation and there was really no reason to do my work. Eventually, I found something that worked for me.
My first step was getting out of bed and making it. I have a hard time focusing on my schoolwork no matter what, so if I make my bed, at least I got one thing accomplished that day. My second step was making a desk for myself on the dining room table. I have a table in my living room, but there’s a tv there and I was worried about getting distracted again. Once I was sat down in my seat, I made a list of what I wanted to accomplish that day, and I always tried to make a sandwich with what I wanted to do. Not like a PB&J, despite those being delicious, but a sandwich where I put something I’m excited to do at the beginning to get me in the swing of things, and something I’m excited to do at the end, so while I’m doing all my boring work at least I have that to look forward to. Finally, I put my phone somewhere where I can’t hear it ring. This is easily one of the hardest steps for me, but I’ll thank myself later when my Screen Time app finally tells me my percentage has gone down. Personally, once I get going, it’s hard to stop, especially without my phone handy.
While classes are behind us, and finals week is here, it seems like the end is right there. However, this week also seems like it’s going to take forever. Finals, final papers and projects due, but just remember, you can party hard on Saturday. I’m not going to condone drinking, but honestly, crack a cold one with the guys or gals in your life when you pass in your final assignment. You deserve it.
